The European Commission has confirmed that the AI Act—the EU's landmark regulation on artificial intelligence—will proceed on schedule, rejecting recent calls from major tech companies and EU member states to delay implementation. Companies like Google (Alphabet), Meta, and European firms such as Mistral and ASML had urged a postponement of several years, citing compliance burdens and regulatory complexity. However, Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier stated firmly, “There is no stop the clock, no grace period, no pause.”
According to the timeline set in the legislation, the first set of provisions began in February 2025, obligations for general-purpose AI models will take effect in August 2025, and high-risk AI models must comply by August 2026. The Commission also plans to propose simplifications for digital regulations later this year, such as reducing reporting duties for small businesses.
Despite the concerns raised—particularly regarding high compliance costs—the EU maintains that these rules are critical to establishing responsible AI development and oversight, especially as the U.S. and China currently dominate the field. The Commission’s firm stance signals its commitment to upholding regulatory timelines and leadership in global AI governance.
